Private Sintra Tours from Lisbon | UNESCO Palaces & Local Secrets

Most people who visit Sintra see the palaces. Very few ever understand them. Growing up in the middle of these forests and hidden places, I have learned that Sintra does not reveal itself to those who rush. It rewards those who know where to look.   These are the tours built for the second kind.

Duca is a small private tours company, rooted in the Alentejo region since 2003, with an office in Sintra. We run four private Sintra tours from Lisbon, each with a driver-guide and door to door transport.

THE SINTRA SIGNATURE

Private full day tour of Sintra from Lisbon

Pena Palace, Quinta da Regaleira and the Moorish Castle, all tickets included

A full day in Sintra with the entrance tickets to its three main monuments already booked: Pena Palace, Quinta da Regaleira and the Moorish Castle. You are collected in Lisbon and driven door to door.

This is the tour we suggest to anyone coming to Sintra for the first time. Nothing to reserve, no queues to plan around, and a driver-guide who knows in which order to visit the three sites so the day stays calm.

We start at Pena Palace, walk the gardens and the initiation well at Quinta da Regaleira, and finish on the walls of the Moorish Castle, with the whole of Sintra below you.

Tickets included. Pena Palace tickets sell out weeks ahead in high season. For this tour we book the entrance to all three sites in advance, so you walk straight in.

A guide who knows the place. Our guides are locals with deep knowledge of Sintra. Your driver-guide explains the history and the symbols of these UNESCO sites in plain words, not from a script.

Your pace. The day is private, so there is no group to wait for and no fixed timetable. We cover the three monuments and adjust the rhythm to you.

Lunch is not included, on purpose. Sintra has good small restaurants away from the main square, and where we stop depends on what you feel like that day. Your driver-guide will have suggestions ready.

Sintra & Cascais Shore Excursion

About five hours, door to door, built for a cruise call in Lisbon or a short stopover. We drive past Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle, walk the gardens of Quinta da Regaleira, then follow the coast through Cabo da Roca and Guincho into Cascais. A dedicated driver-guide stays with you the whole way, with bottled water, WiFi on board and the insurance required by the Portuguese Tourism Board included.

Sintra, Cabo da Roca & Cascais

A full day built around Pena Palace, with your entrance ticket included so there's no queue to plan around. From the palace we head to Cabo da Roca and the cliffs above the Atlantic, then finish the day along the coast in Cascais. A slower pace than the Signature tour, with time to properly walk Pena's terraces instead of moving between three monuments.

What guests say about Sintra with Duca

Rated 5.0 out of 5 on TripAdvisor, from more than 240 reviews. Some of them, about Sintra:

“Sintra has very steep roads, so being dropped right near the spots was a huge relief. A very practical way to visit three different spots in one day.”
Cory C, May 2026, Sintra, Cabo da Roca and Cascais full day

“Pena Palace is colorful and unique inside and out. It's a full-day commitment, but everything ran smoothly.”
Travon A, August 2026, Sintra, Cabo da Roca and Cascais full day

“Quinta da Regaleira was also beautiful but the jewel in the crown was the Palace of Pena, the views are amazing and the gardens stunning.”
TraceyJEvs1, September 2023, Sintra full day

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the name Sintra mean?

Nobody knows for certain. The name may come from Celtic moon worship, from the Roman name Mons Lunae (Mount of the Moon), or from Arabic names used during the Moorish period. We go through the different theories in our blog post on the origin of the name, at duca.pt/blog/sintra-origin-of-the-name.

How do I choose between the four Sintra tours?

If you are short on time or visiting on a cruise stopover, the half day Sintra and Cascais Shore Excursion covers the essentials in about five hours. For a full day at your own pace, choose the Sintra Signature tour or the Sintra, Cabo da Roca and Cascais tour. If you are also spending time in Lisbon, the two day Lisbon and Sintra tour combines both.

Do I need to book Pena Palace tickets separately?

No. Entrance to Pena Palace, or another monument of your choice, is included in all of our Sintra tours, so there is no need to queue or book anything in advance.

How much time should I plan for Sintra?

A half day is enough to see Pena Palace and get a feel for the town. A full day lets you also visit Quinta da Regaleira and the Moorish Castle without rushing between them.

Can a Sintra tour be combined with a Lisbon cruise stop?

Yes. The Sintra and Cascais Shore Excursion is built specifically for cruise passengers, at about five hours door to door, so you are back at the port with time to spare.
