Visiting Fátima from Lisbon: What to Know Before You Go

Fátima is about an hour and a half from Lisbon, entry to the Sanctuary is free, and one day is enough. Here is what I tell guests before they decide how to go.

The Sanctuary of Fátima is a place of pilgrimage for Catholics from many countries, and a quiet stop for visitors who simply want to see it. In 1917 three shepherd children reported apparitions of Our Lady near the village, and the sanctuary grew around that place. Today it is a large open esplanade with the Basilica, the Chapel of the Apparitions and the modern Church of the Holy Trinity.

How far is Fátima from Lisbon?

It is about 130 km, around 1 hour 30 by road. That makes it an easy day trip. With a private vehicle you leave when it suits you, stop where you like on the way, and are back in Lisbon in the evening.

Is there anything to pay or book?

Entry to the Sanctuary is free and there are no tickets to book. What you pay for on our tours is the private vehicle and your driver-guide, and each tour page lists exactly what is included.

When is the best time to go?

The 13th of each month, from May to October, is a pilgrimage day, and 13 May and 13 October bring the largest crowds. Those days are moving to see, but the roads around the sanctuary are very busy. If you prefer a calm visit, choose another date. If you would like to see the pilgrimage, tell me when you write and I will plan around it.

Combine it with Nazaré and Óbidos

A visit to the sanctuary does not need the whole day. Many guests add Nazaré, with its cliffside views, and Óbidos, a walled medieval town. We have a private day trip that joins the three, and a longer heritage route that also includes Alcobaça and Batalha.

What to wear and what to expect

It is a place of worship, so dress as you would for a church, with shoulders covered and no beachwear. The esplanade is open and can be hot in summer, so bring water and a hat.

If you are thinking about Fátima, write to me with your dates and I will suggest how to fit it in. You can also see all of our Fátima private tours from Lisbon.
