Benagil from Lisbon in one day: what the tour looks like
If you are planning to see Benagil from Lisbon, this is the day I put together for my own family and now run for small private groups. We pick you up at your hotel in Greater Lisbon and drive about two and a half hours south, mostly on the A2 motorway. The whole day lasts around 11 hours.
The boat to the Benagil sea caves leaves from Portimão marina. It is a shared boat, so you may be with other travelers for that part, while the van and your driver-guide stay private to your group. On departures at 7am there is also a short walk on the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, ending at Praia da Marinha. We stop at Boneca and Algar Seco, near Carvoeiro, and in the afternoon you choose between Lagos, Albufeira, more beach time or the scenic road back. Lunch is not included. The boat depends on sea conditions, and we adjust the day if it cannot sail.
How a family holiday shaped this tour
This itinerary didn't come from market research. It's a personal memory.
It started in the summer of 2012, on a family holiday in Carvoeiro. I watched my daughter Inês, then 12, exploring the tunnels and natural windows at Boneca and Algar Seco, and it struck me how much more these places gave her than the crowded main beach ever could.
I also took the family to Praia da Marinha, a beach they hadn't seen yet. Carvoeiro was full of people. Marinha was quiet, and we finally had space to relax. It became the place we'd go back to every time.
The pieces were there: the cliffs, the exploring. But it only came together two years later, when an American journalist asked me to guide her and her husband to the Benagil Sea Cave specifically.
That's when it clicked. Connect the Seven Hanging Valleys trail, the quiet of Marinha, the rock formations in Carvoeiro and the boat to Benagil, and you have a full day in the Algarve, exactly what I wanted for my own family.

Plenty of companies run a 'Lisbon to Algarve' tour today. Ours is still the one I built from scratch, based on what I wanted for my own family:
